The collections signed by Vassilis Zoulias are literally a travelogue to the epitome of style, back in the days of elegant Old Athens but also a reminder of every legendary woman who lived in the past decades.
His career started in the magazine world, passed through the shoe industry and he ended up designing prêt à porter de luxe with distinct influences from the '60s and the '70s: the time when women did not wish to be merely fashionable but sought to be included among the truly elegant ones. His gowns have graced the Met Gala, the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globe Awards. Recently, he even launched his first perfume. His only goal is for elegance to reign in every possible way!
What made you decide to pass from magazines into fashion design?
I haven't really decided on anything... Instead life decided for me, as in all major changes in my life so far, both professional and personal.
At the beginning of 2000, there was a gap in the accessories market in Greece where everything was already available but no one was making custom-made shoes the way they were made in the '50s and the '60s.
Therefore, I’ve opened my first boutique with custom-made shoes and bags in October 2003,the “Vassilis Zoulias Old Athens”.
Why did you choose to work on shoes?
I was always obsessed with women in films who were wearing stiletto heels.
Talk to us a about the timeless style of your fashion house. What was your source of inspiration?
To this day, I draw my inspiration from the past. It’s about the old school Hollywood glamour.
What does the Old Athens mean to you?
The Old Athens is something we should all beproud of, given that our city was among themost beautiful cities in the world!
Can you remember a few of the moments when you felt proud?
When Alison Brie styled my gown with a pair of black pants at the Golden Globes 2018 and she was included in every “Best dressed” list.
Then, it was the Met Gala 2018, when actress Mindy Kalling wore a long silver grey satinduchesse gown of mine and styled it with ajeweled crown by Pericles Kondylatos.
The next year at Met Gala the Congress Women Carolyn B.Maloney wears my dress with a combination of a jacket of the New York City Fire Department.
She gave a social message about the reminder for the victims of 9.11 .It was one of the best outfits with intellectual character.
The famous actress Meryem Uzerli was wearing one of my favourite dresses at Cannes Film Festival in Chopard’s Love party. This season in Cannes begun my collaboration with Mephistopheles productions and especially with Mrs Ada Iliopoulou.
And of course, in December 2019, when Gwen Stefani wore a sequin dress from my last couture collection at the final episode of The Voice.
We usually dress many artists who have to go in EMMYS like Robin Weigert in 2019 or Natasha Lyonne and many others as Laura Den etc
Tell us about your new perfume.
My first perfume, The Bow, is a co-creation with Manos Gerakinis. More than a perfume, The Bow is an attitude. Dynamic, inspirational and with all the charming possibilities that could occur in a modern city, it captures in a bottle the spirit and the freshness of urban girls.Top Notes: Iris, Orange blossom. Heart Notes: Violet flower, Raspberry. Base Notes: Vanille, Musk.
Which was your best show so far?
The show dedicated to Fiona Von Thyssenholds a special place in my heart.
